IT Project Manager

Employers Struggle to Find Skilled IT Project Managers

If you’ve noticed that it’s getting more difficult to fill your IT Project Management positions, you’re not alone.

CompTIA reports that February saw an uptick in technology positions in February 2022, with an increase of more than 50,000 jobs posted:

“Among the roles for which employers are struggling to find skilled staff, CompTIA highlighted software developers, software engineers, IT support specialists, IT project managers, network engineers and architects, and systems engineers and architects.

Applicants have a considerable choice when it comes to where they want to work, who they want to work for, and which benefits are worth considering when making career choices. The candidates you’ll be interviewing want to know up front that you’re willing to invest in their future. The competition for attracting and retaining top IT project management talent has never been greater.

Hiring obstacles and delays

With so many positions available, hiring should be easier than ever, right?

Sadly, the opposite is true.

Most businesses plan for a few months at a time but never longer than that.  As a result, nearly half of all IT managers have had to grapple with project delays because businesses could not find candidates ready to take on tech roles. The projects were greenlighted, but the digital talent wasn’t ready to step in.

To make matters worse, 50% of employers have expressed concern regarding employee apathy. Employees aren’t engaged in their work or the company, and they feel as though the company doesn’t care about them.

Finally, world events like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the widespread caution regarding economic sanctions have forced businesses to wait. Companies are trying to ride out the uncertainty by delaying their hires, only to discover that they are paying an average of 10% less than candidates expect.

Best IT project management markets

As bleak as hiring prospects may seem, there is hope.

Healthcare companies urgently need IT talent. Early this spring, Humana, Blue Cross, and Highmark Health were the top employers. The tech services sector witnessed the greatest hiring rush in IT and software development, and many of these positions included remote work options.

Cities looking for IT talent include:

Although it may help, you don’t have to be located in one of these cities to fill your IT project management roles. Contact your professional recruiter to find the talent your project needs.
